Automated Fulfillment Center – Confidential Big Box Retailer

Henderson Engineers continues to advance the future of logistics through the design of next-generation automated fulfillment centers that support the growing demands of modern e-commerce. This 800,000-square-foot, fully automated distribution facility integrates advanced building systems, electrification infrastructure, and sustainable design strategies to create a smarter, more efficient approach to fulfillment operations.

Designed to optimize performance, scalability, and operational efficiency, the project incorporates sophisticated mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire & life safety systems tailored to the complex requirements of high-volume automated logistics environments. Our engineering scope included building systems design that supports both facility operations and large-scale electric vehicle infrastructure, helping position the fulfillment center for long-term resiliency and evolving transportation needs.

A major focus of the project is sustainability and electrification. The facility includes infrastructure for three large yard truck chargers, provisions for 1,000 kVA of over-the-road (OTR) truck charging, and 176 employee electric vehicle charging stations—supporting a transition toward lower-emission transportation and helping align operations with California’s progressive clean energy goals.

To further reduce long-term environmental impact, the fulfillment center was designed as solar ready, with infrastructure in place to support 17 megawatts of photovoltaic solar generation across an 11-acre solar field. This future-ready approach enables seamless renewable energy integration, lowering operational carbon emissions while improving long-term energy efficiency and cost savings.

Developed to meet stringent CalGreen requirements and support the owner’s broader sustainability and electrification strategy, the facility serves as a model for environmentally responsible automated fulfillment center design. Through collaborative planning and technical expertise, Henderson is helping redefine how sustainable logistics and distribution facilities are engineered for the future.
