HEI Project Profile - Long
The first of its kind in the US, Jagalchi Korean Market opened its flagship store at the beginning of 2025. Serving not only as a retail space, but a cultural hub, the store immerses shoppers with the one-of-a-kind experience of Korean food culture. To accomplish this, Henderson Engineers and Henderson Building Solutions were brought in for their building systems and commissioning expertise. Several critical systems were uniquely designed and installed, including a new CO2 refrigeration system that ensures both energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. A specialized HVAC system was installed to control humidity levels, crucial for maintaining freshness of perishable items. The electrical service and distribution were completely overhauled within the former retail facility to accommodate the store's demands, and new plumbing systems were installed for water, waste, and grease management. Wireless lighting control systems were integrated for greater flexibility and energy efficiency, while a desiccant-based dehumidification system was implemented to maintain precise environmental conditions. Web-based refrigeration and HVAC monitoring systems also enabled the client to oversee and manage operations remotely from South Korea, essential to maintaining consistency among all their store locations. Coordinating the installation of unique kitchen equipment was critical to the store's operations, and with sustainability as a key focus throughout the project, several environmentally friendly features were integrated into the design. The low GWP refrigeration system was a significant step towards reducing the store's environmental impact. Along with advanced lighting controls, a highly efficient HVAC system, and the store's electrification, all were designed for energy efficiency and reduced reliance on fossil fuels.
