HEI Project Profile - Long

In an effort to accommodate the growing county's needs, a new health services building is being constructed in Olathe, KS. The facility brings multiple county facilities together under one roof, including Johnson County Mental Health Center, Johnson County Department of Health and Environment, and Johnson County Aging and Human Services. The integrated design reflects a holistic approach to patient care, aligning with the principles of Public Health 3.0, which emphasizes the importance of addressing physical, mental, and emotional determinants of health. By fostering collaboration among departments, the Health Services Building aims to serve as a model for modern, comprehensive public health services. As the chosen engineer for the project, Henderson Engineers designed multiple systems, including chilled water with air cooled chillers, heating water with electric boilers, energy recovery units for dedicated outside air, fan coil units for space temperature control, LED lighting, lighting control system, low flow and ultra-low flow plumbing fixtures, and a generator for emergency power. The new facility will include private consultation spaces, multi-purpose rooms to support group therapy and community health events, increased daylight and connection to nature, and welcoming features that promote wellbeing and comfort. Sustainable features include a water reclamation system with the potential to reclaim two million gallons of water a year and over 43,000 SF of rooftop solar panels. The design goal is to provide infrastructure so that the building is net zero ready. Currently in construction, the building is slated to complete in the fall of 2027 with a target to achieve LEED Certification.
