HEI Project Profile - Long

When Liberty Hospital decided to expand their services to offer cardiology, they trusted Henderson Engineers to assist with the building systems design. The cardiology unit included a two-story surgery addition consisting of cardiovascular operating rooms, an operating room, two catheterization labs with five adjoining recovery bays, and space to accommodate future growth. Due to the expansion, proximity to the existing utility plant, additional capacity needs, and age of the existing systems, our primary focus was restoring and relocating the central utility and the bulk oxygen plants. Using a phased approach, our engineers designed the addition of three boilers, three new chillers, associated cooling towers, and increased electrical service. The second story addition impacted the height of the existing central plant. With extensive communication, the project team was able to take off the top foot of the plant to align the addition without disrupting hospital operations. This project was awarded the ASHE Vista Award for Infrastructure, which involves modifying or replacing major portions of the utility generation, distribution, or control systems, involving significant project planning.
