HEI Project Profile - Long

The original Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital first opened in 1956 as the nation’s first free-standing, not-for-profit Catholic children’s hospital. To continue their mission in providing world-class pediatric care, SSM Health is currently building a new world-class replacement facility to enhance patient care. The new hospital will feature 210 patient beds as follows: • 24 Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) Beds • 90 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Beds • 24 Telemetry Care Unit (TCU) Beds • 24 Hematology-Oncology (Hem-Onc) Beds • 48 Medical/Surgical (Med/Surg) Beds SSM Health has ambitious energy efficiency goals, including a commitment to achieving carbon neutrality for healthcare facilities by 2050. To align with SSM’s long-term sustainability goals, Henderson Engineers adopted a flexible approach to heating hot water production. We elected to not install a traditional steam plant, which is the traditional method for large healthcare facilities. As the trend of electrification continues and the use of natural gas declines, we provided hot water heating that allows SSM to convert to electrical boilers rather than gas fired boilers in the future. This project represents a substantial investment in the future of pediatric healthcare. It features family-friendly rooms, patient-centered design principles, and the capacity to accommodate future growth and evolving healthcare needs. Additionally, it supports SSM Health’s ongoing efforts to establish a world-renowned academic medical campus.
