LENEXA, Kan. – On Wednesday, Henderson Engineers was selected by
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) to be the engineer of record for
mechanical,
electrical, and
plumbing design at the new single terminal that will be constructed at
Kansas City International Airport. The project is being delivered by
Edgemoor Infrastructure & Real Estate;
SOM is the lead architect for the new terminal; and construction will be led by the
Clark Weitz Clarkson joint venture team. Henderson was one of 14 local businesses selected for the project and will also provide
fire protection,
security, and
technology services for the innovative airport that was
overwhelmingly approved by Kansas City, Missouri voters on Nov. 7.
“We are proud to be part of the design team for the new single terminal at KCI,” said Henderson Engineers President & CEO
Rich Smith. “We look forward to partnering with
Edgemoor,
SOM, and
Clark Construction on this transformational project for our city. As part of the Kansas City community, with offices on both sides of the state line, this project means a great deal to us. We’re honored to help bring this new terminal to life for our city.”
Henderson is committed to exceeding the city’s M/WBE requirements in a collaborative manner and has assembled a team of Kansas City-based minority and women-owned businesses to assist in managing the engineering scope, including
FSC, Inc.,
LightWorks, Inc.,
Custom Engineering, and
S&S Engineering, Inc. The firms will play a significant role in the project.
“Relationships are at the core of our business. We know that the people on projects matter, which is why we identified a team of local consultants who care as much about this project as we do,” said
Shane Lutz, Henderson Engineers executive officer and project executive. “We’ve worked with these minority and women-owned businesses on many projects together and know what it takes to make this terminal another successful collaboration.”
The new KCI terminal is the latest addition to Henderson’s large venue project portfolio, which also includes serving as the engineer of record on the Los Angeles Stadium and Entertainment District at Hollywood Park in Inglewood, California, the largest sports venue project in the world.
“KCI is the front door and first impression for visitors to our community. We’re ready for the world to experience the best KC has to offer at the new KCI,” Smith noted. “This project is inspiring to us all because it will enhance our region for future generations. Being part of this team is a dream come true for all of us at Henderson Engineers.”
Henderson has committed that 100 percent of its KCI workforce will be located in the Kansas City metro area. The firm prides itself on being well-informed on the region’s goals. More than 500 of Henderson’s 700-plus employees are local members of the Kansas City community. At any given time, 10 percent of Henderson’s workforce is in the air with 75 percent of the flights going through KCI.
