Not every school can claim to have a building designed by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright — but Arizona State University can. Gammage Auditorium was built in 1964 and it’s the only public project in Arizona commissioned by Wright. It is also on the list of the National Register of Historic Places. ASU is a long-time Henderson Engineers client and we’ve partnered with the school on many campus projects. For Gammage, we designed new elevators, emergency ramps, restrooms, and other ancillary improvements for the Sun Devil auditorium. Our changes were geared toward enhancing visitor experience — without compromising Wright’s design. In its five decades, Gammage has hosted many of the world’s top performances and events. Acts such as Steve Martin and Bruce Springsteen have appeared there, along with shows like Cats, Kinky Boots, and the Book of Mormon. Gammage even hosted a Bush-Kerry 2002 presidential debate. Wright thought buildings should be in harmony with people and their environments. We think ASU’s pursuit of LEED Silver certification for Gammage is a fitting tribute to the auditorium’s architectural pedigree.
