Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital – SSM Health
As the nation’s first freestanding, not-for-profit Catholic pediatric hospital, Cardinal Glennon has served children and families across the region since 1956. A new 14-story hospital is now rising in St. Louis’ Midtown to carry that legacy forward. With approximately 200 inpatient beds and patient-centered design that includes spaces for parents, siblings, and caregivers, the facility meets the growing demand for advanced pediatric care in the region.
To support SSM Health’s commitment to achieving carbon-neutral operations by 2050, Henderson Engineers developed a forward-thinking, sustainable approach to the hospital’s heating and hot water systems. Rather than using a conventional steam plant, the design incorporates a flexible infrastructure that will allow a future transition to all-electric boilers. This choice positions the hospital to meet evolving sustainability goals while maintaining reliable performance and long-term value.
Beyond energy innovation, the hospital expands access to critical services such as neonatal and pediatric intensive care, hematology-oncology, and cardiology. Integrated labs, imaging, and recovery spaces streamline care delivery and improve the experience for patients and staff alike. The project represents a major investment in children’s health and a shared commitment to building a brighter, healthier future for families throughout St. Louis.
