HCA Healthcare
HEI Project Profile - Long
HCA Healthcare is one of the nation’s leading healthcare providers. With more than 170 hospitals and 120 freestanding clinics, HCA has a presence across the United States and the United Kingdom. Henderson Engineers has worked with HCA for more than 20 years. Over that time, we’ve not only helped improve existing facilities, but have also worked with their design and construction team to build new ones. Together with Henderson Building Solutions, our sister company, we’ve boosted operations for more than 200 HCA facilities. HCA began working with us through infrastructure improvement projects with Henderson Building Solutions. During these projects, our construction managers work closely with HCA through a detailed planning process that covers development phases, temporary facilities used during construction, and key timing milestones. Henderson Engineers and Henderson Building Solutions collaborate to design and determine logistics of construction to reduce project risks. This is a key reason our teams consistently hit budget parameters, are able to minimize change orders, and nearly eliminate other corrective measures. Because of the success of these projects, our relationship with HCA has grown to include designing new construction, remodels, and major expansions. Healthcare and engineering are vastly different fields — but as our enduring partnership with HCA demonstrates, working with integrity and showing clients respect are values that translate across any industry. Lighting Retrofits Profile HCA Healthcare called upon Henderson to help implement the next phase of its lofty energy reduction program. Our team was quickly able to assist by assessing over 75 facilities and cataloging lighting types and utility data before providing a site-by-site comparison to help determine the Return on Investment (ROI) for each facility. Once funding was approved, bid documents along with photometric calculations that considered both normal and emergency power sources were completed. The process allowed the owner to improve lighting control capability and bring noncompliant areas up to code-required light levels. Henderson either provided retrofit kits, specified similar fixtures, or designed complementary light sources for decorative light fixtures. Some zones/systems were added to the building automation system to improve efficiency. Project scopes included hospitals, parking lots and garages, and pedestrian walkways. Implementation of the lighting retrofit project posed several construction challenges, including keeping critical areas—suchas the ICU and ED—fully operational. The Henderson procurement process took full advantage of bulk quantities with specific FOB jobsitebreakouts for maximum cost savings.
