HEI Project Profile - Long

Pittsburg State University completed the renovation and expansion of McPherson Hall as a commitment to the growing demand for qualified nurses in an ever-changing care environment. The project supports a larger enrollment and delivered a new, dynamic, state-of-the-art simulation hospital. Students will receive a hands-on education with nurse’s station, four exam rooms, six hospital rooms, control room, observation, and supporting work areas. There is also an active-learning classroom for a combined cohort of 120 students, divisible into two 60-seat instructional spaces. Henderson Engineers designed the building systems with updated technology, AV, energy efficient systems, life safety, and accessibility. Project included expansion of the facility’s existing geothermal system. Thermal conductivity tests were run during design on the existing ground conditions to right size the geothermal system and save the University money in equipment and boring costs. Additionally, significant amount of research and calculations were spent on the building’s plumbing system for connection to the building addition. In the end, sanitary lift stations were required to allow the building addition’s sanitary routing to work with existing pipe elevations. Henderson’s technology design team worked closely with the medical education consultant to locate and provide infrastructure to all the necessary simulation equipment to serve the simulation spaces. Through close collaboration with the pre-construction general contractor, the project remained in budget through design and bidding.
