HEI Project Profile - Long

Shriners Hospital is renowned for its commitment to pediatric healthcare. With locations all across North America, making sure all facilities are up-to-date and able to offer patients the highest standard of care is no easy feat. That’s why Shriners chose Henderson Engineers to provide engineering services to design new spaces in their existing Galveston hospital. The project’s goal was to consolidate the Shriners Houston facility into the Galveston facility; all the services offered in Houston were moved to Galveston. The biggest challenge was providing engineering design within old spaces with new purposes, while using all the existing MEP infrastructure. We had to be mindful that the multi-story building remained operational throughout construction, even as entire floors were being renovated. Disruptions needed to be minimized, so our designs had to be as efficient and minimally disruptive as possible. We coordinated with the owner, architect, and contractor to finalize a phasing plan that would work with our engineering design. We ensured permit drawings were approved for the contractor to meet a demanding construction schedule and used value engineering to bring to the project under budget. The success of this project is evident in the project team’s ability to work together and provide solutions that met the needs of the end users.
