HEI Project Profile - Long
The Walmart Next Generation Supercenter in Cypress, Texas represents a bold step in Walmart’s evolving retail strategy. Henderson Engineers provided full-scope building systems design supporting the retailer’s broad national blueprint to modernize its portfolio and revolutionize the retail shopping experience. Our work covered mechanical, electrical, and plumbing practices, as well as refrigeration, fire protection and life safety system design, all engineered to support Walmart’s – focused sustainability, prioritized convenience, and seamless digital integration. Walmart’s ambition to innovate at an extensive speed and scale requires Henderson’s ability to engineer consistent scalable systems that adapt and cater to the ever-evolving retail strategies. Drawing on decades of experience with Walmart’s prototypes, our team delivered full-scope building systems that support the new layout, omnichannel services, and technology–forward features. Key technical features included a transcritical CO2 refrigeration system using natural refrigerant, this system results in zero ozone depletion and limiting global warming potential. Henderson also conducted functional testing to verify systems met owner requirements. Our HVAC design incorporated systems allowing zoned climate control, energy recovery strategies, and demand-controlled ventilation tailored to local the climate conditions. Recognizing how lighting shapes user navigation, mood, and interaction, the design prioritized both functionality and aesthetics to elevate the customer experience. The project features a 100% LED lighting system with daylight harvesting and advanced control integration to optimize energy performance and enhance visual quality. With intentional coordination, the electrical distribution design supports complex operations, including dedicated loads for grocery, full-service pharmacy equipped with a drive-thru, an auto care center, and Walmart’s newest feature: fueling station with eight pumps. All systems were coordinated in close collaboration with our partnering architect, contractors, and Walmart’s internal development team to support real-time design updates and a fast-track construction schedule. Our longstanding partnership with Walmart allowed us to apply proven engineering strategies while accommodating the rapid evolution of their store model. The Cypress Supercenter stands as a model for scalable, high-performance retail – delivered through Henderson’s integrated, technically rigorous design solutions.
