David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium Modernization – University of Kansas

The University of Kansas partnered with Henderson Engineers to transform the David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium into a modern, sustainable sports venue designed to enhance both fan experience and athletic performance. The project includes the demolition and reconstruction of the North and West stands, with completion targeted for the 2025 football season. The project also featured extensive renovations and expansion of the Anderson Family Football Complex (AFFC) to create a seamless connection between athletic operations and the new stadium facilities.

At the heart of the modernization is a future-ready central utility plant (CUP) that supports the stadium, conference center, and future East Stadium expansion. The CUP integrates energy-efficient systems designed to reduce environmental impact while improving reliability and long-term performance. A new lighting system inspired by the University’s iconic “Waving of the Wheat” tradition further enhances the in-game experience for fans.

Henderson led the design of the CUP with an emphasis on sustainability, flexibility, and technology-driven performance. The team maintained full operation of the AFFC throughout construction while converting its systems from a water-based to a glycol-based loop with minimal downtime. Henderson also repurposed existing cooling equipment from the original press tower to supplement the new CUP during low-demand periods, cutting energy use and operational costs.

Collaboration with multiple University departments, including IT, ensured the successful relocation of the campus IT Cross Connect room that serves more than 20 buildings. Building on its extensive experience across KU’s campus, Henderson delivered an efficient, future-focused engineering design that supports sustainable operations, enhances fan engagement, and positions KU Memorial Stadium as a next-generation collegiate sports venue.
